Mechanical Engineer

We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated Mechanical Engineer with an unconventional perspective and, ideally, experience in developing water-treatment or extraction-related apparatus and processes. This specialist will work closely with our team of mechanical engineers, chemical engineers, physicists, and chemists to transition our technology from the lab to pilot-scale and beyond.

Summit Nanotech is a burgeoning clean tech start-up that is developing a novel direct lithium extraction process to improve the sustainability of lithium mining to support the EV revolution. Our solutions will reduce emissions, eliminate environmental contaminants, and optimize inefficient processes to generate legitimately green energy storage solutions. Duties and responsibilities:

  • Collaborate in the development and design of processes and systems for extracting lithium with site-specific requirements

  • Assist in scale-up strategy from prototype to demonstration plant

  • Design, fabricate, and test mechanical equipment for prototype and commercial systems based on site-specific requirements

  • Ensure compliance with all applicable customer engineering and safety standards, practices, procedures, plant documentation requirements, and methods of installations, including authentication of designs where necessary

  • Communicate with engineering team and clients including attending team meetings, writing reports and support documentation, and preparing presentations.

  • Operate and support pilot on location beginning late-2021


Qualifications and Skills

  • Post-secondary degree in Engineering with 5+ years of overall experience and an APEGA-registered P. Eng.

  • 5+ years of experience in water/fluid related design and optimization is preferred

  • Knowledge of industry regulations, standards, and practices

  • Registered as a professional engineer with APEGA

  • Experience in mechanical design and fabrication

  • Capable of performing basic Finite Element Analysis and Computational Fluid Dynamics

  • Interest in applying software and electronic hardware to assist in mechanical challenges and automation

  • Confident in solid modeling using CAD programs (preferably SolidWorks)

  • Operating and fabrication experience an asset

  • Experience in scale-up from laboratory to pilot scale is an asset

  • Self-motivated, proactive, flexible, and enjoys working in a fast-paced team environment

  • Highly effective communication skills

  • Must be comfortable in a team-oriented approach to problem solving 

  • Effective time management, organization, and prioritization skills

  • Creative perspective and out-of-the-box thinker
