We are looking for an enthusiastic, self-motivated scientist with a background in polymer membrane research and/or production to lead the development of an innovative method of selective lithium extraction from brines using bipolar membranes. Reporting to the VP Technology and Innovation, this scientist will work closely with our internal team to screen materials, produce membrane prototypes, and optimize parameters to build upon the existing foundation of the project.



  • Research, understand, and develop a testing plan to build upon the foundation of the current project

  • Screen and test a variety of polymer and lithium-selective materials in prototypes to optimize the lithium extraction performance

  • Perform research and consult experts to inform the design of the lithium extraction unit

  • Conduct experiments under defined conditions to verify/reject various types of hypotheses using refined scientific methods

  • Lead the project internally with the support of the R&D and prototyping teams as well as the VP Technology and Innovation

  • Collaborate closely with the technology development and engineering teams to align the apparatus with the process requirements

  • Communicate and collaborate with external customers and research teams

  • Organize and store all chemicals substances, fluids and compressed gases according to safety instructions

  • Record all data and results in specified forms (paper and electronic) with accuracy and responsibility

  • Maintain equipment and assist in ordering laboratory supplies

  • Ensure that all safety guidelines are followed strictly at all times and maintain a clean and orderly environment


  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in engineering or chemistry

  • Experience in membrane production and polymers with specific experience with bipolar membrane design and production an asset

  • Proven experience in a research and/or scientific design role

  • Experience in operating electrical and nonelectrical laboratory equipment and potentially dangerous substances (flammable liquids, infectious bacteria, biohazards etc.)

  • Knowledge of QHSE Systems, preventative measures and laboratory best practices

  • Good physical condition and endurance

  • Working knowledge of MS Office (especially Excel) and database systems

  • Ability to work autonomously and under pressure

  • Self-motivated, proactive and flexible with potential to work in a fast-paced, nimble team environment

  • Highly effective communication skills 

  • Effective time management, organization, and prioritization skills

  • High level technical skills and willingness to learn
