We are looking for a Junior Process Engineer to assist the Research and Development team with the design of a novel lithium extraction process from lab-scale to field deployment and commercialization. The successful candidate must be able to work on complex problems with incomplete information and ambiguous objectives. Experience in water treatment process design for energy, chemical, or other industrial sectors is an asset.

  • Assist with conception and design of novel lithium extraction processes

  • Prepare process engineering packages, documents, specifications, and drawings, as required

  • Collect and analyze data from the lab and from test apparatuses

  • Prepare heat and mass balances and conduct equipment sizing calculations

  • Specify equipment for test apparatuses and pilot plants

  • Review drawings and data from 3rd parties

  • Collaborate with other engineering disciplines to complete projects and solve problems

  • Participate in development of project schedule, scope, budget resource planning and construction planning

  • Quality review the construction administration including coordination with field personnel to resolve design related installation issues, calculations, field inspections and testing of process systems.

  • Develop process test plans to safely scope, test and evaluate process optimization opportunities and then formalize into routine operations upon successful outcome.

  • Develop process control narratives and standards

  • Participate in risk analysis and safety review of processes and equipment

  • Reviewing detailed engineering documents and specifications

  • Assemble, operate, and maintain test apparatuses when required

  • Test and commission new processes and pilot units


  • 2+ years experience in water treatment equipment design in an industrial sector (oil and gas, mining, chemical processing, water treatment, etc.)

  • Bachelor of Applied Science/Science/Engineering in Chemical Engineering or related discipline.

  • Experience with electrochemical treatment systems will be considered an asset

  • Strong mathematical skills and technical knowledge

  • Troubleshooting of water treatment equipment such as membrane systems, fixed bed columns, solvent extraction, oxidation, and other common water treatment processes

  • Registered Engineer in Training (E.I.T.) of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta.

  • Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel).

  • Experience with process simulation software (i.e., Hysys and/or Aspen,OLI, HTRI) is preferred.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills, ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment.

  • Strong attention to detail, facilitation, team building, collaboration, organization and problem-solving skills.

  • Ability to be flexible and jump in where needed
