POSITION DESCRIPTION

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Steward our invention harvesting process to identify new inventions and evaluate patent and trade secret readiness.

  • Prepare detailed summaries of inventions and trade secrets with reference to figures and data;

  • Design experiments, analyze data, and write experimental reports for incorporation into patent and trade secret specifications.

  • Draft patent and trade secret specifications.

  • Facilitate prosecution of a global patent portfolio, including providing detailed analyses of patent documents and preparing substantive instructions for external counsel.

  • Conduct patent searches, assess and document competitive intelligence information, and advise on patent landscapes in areas of interest.

  • Maintain IP records, improve IP management processes/systems, and build/manage a database of technical literature.

  • Build patent-professional competencies in accordance with standards established by the College of Patent Agents and Trademark Agents, including registering and training as a Class 3 licensee.

SKILLS AND QUALIFICATIONS

  • 2+ years of R&D experience in an industrial sector (preferably oil and gas, mining, chemical processing, water treatment, or pharmaceuticals)

  • An MSc or PhD in a science or engineering field (preferably chemistry, material science, or chemical engineering).

  • Demonstrated technical writing and verbal communication skills.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate complex technological issues in a clear, concise manner.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills with the ability to work logically, methodically, and efficiently in a complex problem-solving environment.

  • Proven ability to plan and manage their own activities to deliver on spec.

  • A strong desire to build new professional competencies in accordance with standards established by the College of Patent Agents and Trademark Agents.

  • Management experience is an asset – including scoping projects, reporting progress, and documenting process.

  • Experience with creating technical literature databases and using patent searching software is also an asset.
